Fast food trailers have come a long way over the last decade and have become part of the mainstream of popular food culture.

In previous times, food trucks were associated with hamburgers and hot dogs served on the side of the road, now it's all about gourmet.

Foods from around the world have driven this evolution into the modern food truck industry we have today.

From the spicy flavours of Southeast Asia to the more subtle flavours of the Middle East.

So, if you're looking for food truck menu ideas for your new street food start-up, you've come to the right place and we want you to take a look at some of the most popular food truck menu ideas.

1. Sushi

Fresh and healthy sushi stands and food trailers are becoming a new feature in the mobile catering industry.

Sushi stands are very popular in Thailand and if you have been there you would no doubt have seen one.

However, sushi food trucks are bursting onto the scene in our country, they have been appearing for years in different parts and especially at fairs and street markets, and they have established themselves as a trend because they specialise in surprising us.

2. Shiro

Ethiopian food may not have been discovered lately, but this is changing.

The picture above is a dish called Shiro, which is a popular Ethiopian dish, which is a stew made of ground chickpeas or broad beans mixed with spices such as chilli and ginger.

It is then served on a bread called "Injera" which has a slightly spongy texture made from teff flour.

3. Falafels

Another popular item on the menu of the healthy, meat-free food truck caravan.

For those who don't know what a Falafel is, they are crispy balls made from chickpeas.

The chickpeas are mixed with a variety of spices and oil and then fried.

They are then served in a salad wrap or salad box.

4. Pho

Vietnamese food is starting to emerge on the food truck scene and it's definitely something to keep an eye on.

Fresh, fragrant and healthy Vietnamese food is a good choice for anyone looking for food trailer menu ideas.

Probably one of their most famous dishes is called 'pho', which consists of noodles, herbs and a variety of different meats served in a broth.

5. Banh Mi Sandwich

Another Vietnamese favourite, Banh Mi has a French influence with a Vietnamese twist.

It's a fairly simple concept of a French baguette stuffed with a meat patty, sliced pork or chicken and egg with cucumbers, pickled carrots and chili and mayonnaise dressing.

In fact, you can get a little creative with this dish and add other vegetables.

6. Burrito

Burritos are a good menu item for food trucks.

They are tortilla wraps filled with shredded meat such as beef (carnitas) and rice, beans, avocado and salad.

And it's a very low-maintenance type of meal that always helps when you're in the edge of a mobile food truck with limited space.

7. Tacos

Moving on to another famous Mexican dish, let's talk about tacos.

Similar to a burrito in terms of flavours and the things you can add to it, tacos consist of small corn or wheat tortillas filled with a variety of meat, vegetables and condiments.

They are great with guacamole, cheese and sour cream.

8. Pad Thai

Thai food has to rank up there with our favourite national foods (we'll tell you about the first one later).

Spicy and fresh, Pad Thai is probably one of the most familiar dishes to Westerners.

And that should come in handy if you're trying to sell this food in your home country.

Made in a wok, the noodles are stir-fried with a variety of meat, such as chicken or prawns with spicy bean sprouts over a Thai sauce and topped with peanuts.

For a vegetarian option, you can also cook it with egg.

9. Dhal

Indian food is another popular food all over the world due to its excellent flavour.

It also has many dishes to choose from when looking for menu ideas for a food truck in Spain.

Dhal is made from various split legumes such as lentils, peas and beans and blended with spices to create a soup.

This dish goes well with naan bread and as a street food business is relatively cheap to produce.

10. Gourmet burgers

I don't think this mobile food truck food needs any introduction.

Burgers have been one of the most popular menu items since the beginning. And all these years it's still number 1.

But this does not always mean a saturated market, as there is still a demand for good quality gourmet burgers.

The secret ingredient is your imagination and creativity, as a burger will allow you to innovate in unlimited ways.

11. Hot dogs

When looking for food truck caravan menu ideas, this is another safe bet.

Like hamburgers, hot dogs have been served from all kinds of mobile catering units, from food carts and stalls to large catering units for years.

And like burgers, it remains a popular choice in the street food scene.

12. Fried chicken

Fried chicken is often associated with a chain of fried chicken shops that we won't name here.

And it has grown to the size it has for a very simple reason - people love fried chicken! It is surprising to see very few fried chicken stands or food trucks.

So, if you live in an area like mine, this might be a good idea for a food truck menu to start with.

13. Bao Buns

Chinese food is another national cuisine that I think is underrepresented in the food truck and street food scene.

Bao buns are made of flattened bread (known as lotus bread) stuffed with slices of stewed meat such as pork belly and garnished with pickled mustard greens and ground peanuts.

Although this dish has its origins in China, you may also see Korean restaurants or gastro nets selling them.

14. Barbecue Chicken

I told you which dish was in my top five, so welcome to my favourite type of international food.

And I'm not the only one who loves Caribbean food, and in Spain it's also very popular in the fast food trailer scene, especially as a summer barbecue food.

There's nothing like the smell of smoky jerk chicken on the barbecue to awaken people's interest.

15. Grilled Cheese Sandwiches

Grilled cheese sandwiches are good because people eat them at any time of the day, for breakfast, lunch or dinner.

This means that you can sell a large quantity at a great price, therefore, you will have higher sales and profits in your food truck business.

16. Jacket potatoes

What can I say about the humble spud, apart from the fact that it's very versatile and there's not much that doesn't go with it?

It's also a type of food that seems to be becoming popular in mobile food truck stands.

17. Loaded chips

Loaded chips are good as a stand-alone product in a niche food truck caravan or as a garnish for stands selling burgers or hot dogs.

This is a good product because of its simplicity, cost of production and because it is an easy ingredient for stock control as you are only using one main product.

18. Stone-baked pizza

This iconic Italian dish is probably one of the most famous dishes in existence and will not be a hard sell to attract customers in your food trailer.

It is also a very versatile dish with an infinite variety of toppings to choose from and relatively easy to produce.

19. Macaroni and cheese

Mac & cheese or macaroni and cheese, as you want to call it, is a pretty versatile dish.

Made with macaroni pasta with melted cheese and then covered with a variety of toppings.

It goes particularly well with salami, smoked bacon or fried shrimp.

20. Juices and smoothies

Food trucks in Spain and the street food concept are not just about the main course you know.

Drinks like juices and smoothies are also very popular, especially in summer.

And the profit margin on this type of product is relatively high.

21. Coffee

Our nation's addiction to coffee is not just limited to coffee shops in towns and cities.

Coffee is also a staple in the mobile food truck industry with mobile coffee carts selling lattes and cappuccinos at street food markets.

22. Ice cream

This is another product that needs no real presentation.

Ice cream has been and still is a very popular street food product.

Food trailers are now also branching out into vegan ice cream options.

However, be aware that this can be a seasonal product, so if you live in a climate with cold winters, this may not be right for you.

23. Crepes

French crepe stands have been around for quite some time and are a good choice for a food truck caravan menu idea.

Easy to make and with a relatively low ingredient cost, crepes can be served as a sweet or salty food truck dish.

24. Mango sticky rice

I can't say I've saved the best to last, but if it's on my list, then it's an item worth considering.

It's a simple but very tasty Thai dessert made with ripe mango and sticky rice served with sweet coconut milk.

Unless you have been to Thailand, you may not be familiar with this type of street food. Therefore, I recommend it as a possible menu idea and option for your food truck caravan.

Final thoughts

All mobile caravan food ideas were listed, not only because they are popular in many places, but also because they are suitable foods to cook in the edge of a food truck or food stand.

Fast food trailers are also a good place to "carve out a niche" in a specific area, so choosing one dish and adding other types of food from the same country or region is probably a good ideal.

That way, you will stand out from the crowd and people will know what food you specialise in.
